Another Act of Violence against a Montreal Muslim School: CQCI Calls Upon Government Officials to Respond to the Climate of Violence Against Muslims

Montreal, Tuesday 10 February 2015 — The Quebec Collective against Islamphobia (CQCI) strongly condemns the act of violence (shots fired) against the École Musulmane secondaire de Montréal (EMM – Montreal Muslim Secondary School).

« This hate act takes place in the wake of a series of highly mediatized reports and investigations on Muslim schools and other Muslim community institutions. It’s a further sign of a deteriorating social climate for Quebec’s Muslims, » said Adil Charkaoui, CQCI coordinator.

The CQCI is calling on municipal, provincial and federal officials to play their role in the fight against Islamophobia by responding to CQCI’s recommendations for a plan of action against Islamophobic racism and a public awareness campaign to restore the social peace.

« Not only politicians have a duty to combat hate speech and violent acts targetting the Muslim community. Mass media must also become more conscious that, by keeping the Muslim community under scrutiny, it can greatly contribute to stigmatization, » added Charkaoui.

Over the past weeks, the Muslim community has been under the spotlight every single day as certain media outlets have redoubled their efforts to investigate Muslim institutions and detect instances of religious accomodation.
